Learning Technologies Workshop

Availability of alternative language versions of a learning resource in LOM

Introduction

The CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) 14040 produced by the Learning Technologies Workshop in October 2000 identifies 'Availability of alternative language versions of a learning resource in LOM' as one of the high priority requirements for standard-related activity in relation to learning technologies.

As a response to this requirement the Learning Technology has initiated a work item, in the context of which a report on standardization actions that permit the identification of alternative versions of resources, in different languages, as well as the origin of the translation in metadata based on the IEEE LTSC LOM specification, is expected.

Rationale

The current LOM specification provides the means for identifying the existence of a version of a resource. However, in cases where this version is a localization of the resource in a particular language the identification and origin definition processes are not fully supported by the existing LOM data model.

Addressing this problem involves the definition of a profile of the LOM specification which constaints or extends appropriate values for a number of elements in the LOM Schema, or even proposes new elements that indicate:

Deliverables

The deliverable of this project is to be a CEN Workshop Agreement aiming at the establishment of an application profile of the IEEE LTSC LOM, which will support the indication of the availability of alternative language versions of a learning resource.

Stakeholders of this product will be authors and learners searching for a particular lingual version of a learning resource

Workplan

April 2001 - Leuven: Project Team kick-off meeting
July 2001 - Brussels: First draft report presentation
December 2001 - Berlin: Second draft report presentation
May 2002 - Madrid Third draft report presentation
October 2002 - Paris: Final CWA presentation

CWA Download and Ballot area

In the following weeks the Project Team will initiate a ballot process in order to build consensus concerning the proposed CWA. Participating members will be able to download the proposed CWA and use the following form for stating their opinion.
