VENUE Valdivia is located 840 km (520 mi) South of Santiago (Chile's Capital) in the X Region "Region de los Lagos". The city is crossed by the Calle-Calle river, which is sailed by all sorts of boats from kajaks to ocean-going vessels. There are many beautiful lakes in the region: Panguipulli, Rin~ihue, Calafquen, and Ranco, all within 120 km (75 mi) and 10 others within 180 km (110 mi). The Pacific Ocean is just 14 km (9 mi) away with nice beaches (Chile's beaches are cold, though). Food in Valdivia is a mixture of Chilean and German food, because of the many German immigrants that came to the region a few generations ago. You must try locally made marzipan and pastries. To arrive in Valdivia you should fly to Santiago in one of several airlines, and then to Valdivia in a Chilean airline. Major Chilean airlines are Ladeco and LAN; in both of them ticket prices are lower if bought 10 days in advance. Alternatively you can take a bus from Santiago; some buses have very large seats ("salon cama") and you can sleep your way to Valdivia.
